Harald Baayen and I have been working on putting together a textbook that teaches basic programming in Python for "language research" (if you can think of a better term, let us know), which is meant to be a broad cover term which includes ordinary working linguists (e.g., fieldworkers), speech scientists, computational linguists, psycholinguists, sociolinguists, etc. It is meant to assume little or no background in programming and aims to provide a fairly broad coverage of Python. The tentative title is Beginning Python Programming for Language Research. A rough draft of the book is available in manuscript form as a PDF below. All of the code used in the book is available as a compressed archive. It's a work in progress and we welcome feedback.
